ABOUT
Dr. Bassanelli is board certified in Psychiatry. He has been a California licensed psychiatrist for 30 years. He is the former medical director of Outpatient Behavioral Health at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, and has a private practice in Palm Desert, California. He has held positions as medical director of mental health services in multiple venues including an HMO, inpatient long-term mental health residential program, acute inpatient psychiatric stabilization unit, inpatient geropsychiatry program and psychiatric crisis emergency service. He has worked as a psychiatric consultant in general medical hospitals and public community mental health clinics.
Areas of expertise include psychopharmacology of mood and anxiety disorders in adults, psychotherapy with adults and geriatric psychiatry. In addition he has more than 15 years of experience performing forensic evaluations for mental health and probate conservatorships, capacity for treatment and testamentary capacity, Independent Medical Evaluations (IME), and expert witness work in civil litigation.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from St. Bonaventure University, St Bonaventure NY before completing his Master of Arts degree in biochemical pharmacology from SUNY Buffalo-Roswell Park Division. After receiving his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in Albany, New York, he completed his internship and residency training at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in general adult psychiatry. He has practiced in New York and California. He has held academic appointments as clinical faculty at UCLA-Neuropsychiatric Institute, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, and assistant professor of clinical psychiatry SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine. He currently serves as an instructor in the Eisenhower Family Medicine Residency Training Program.
He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, California Psychiatric Association, and Southern California Psychiatric Society. His awards include St. Bonaventure University Biology Award 1978, Albany Medical College Robert Shapiro Prize 1981, Mentor of the Year, SUNY Buffalo Residency 1998, NAMI Buffalo and Erie County Exemplary Psychiatrist Award 2000, Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association 2003. He has been named in Palm Springs Life/Coachella Valley Top Doctors of the year 2006 through 2011.
